Live Sailing from Langkawi
Thursday, 10 January 2008
ImageThe Royal Langkawi International Regatta, currently taking place in  Malaysia, was the opportunity to speak  with  MOHD AFFENDY ABDULLAH,  the  chairman for sailing development in Malaysia,  (Malaysian Yachting Association). Interview !

How many teams are there in this regatta, and what is the importance of this regatta?

We have 36 teams here. Langkawi is a tourist island, during the regatta, there will be many people come and visit here, and they will go back and tell the story here to their friends, so it’s good promotion.

Malaysia is a country with its long coast line about 4675km, and the climate here is very good, we can say that it’s a perfect country for sailing, so how is the development of sailing here? And do you forsee some projects?

In fact, in the southern part of Malaysia, we can’t sail. But here in Langkawi, you can sail all year round.
Today in Malaysia, we are developing sailing, and the situation is improving. We have a sailing center here in Langkawi and we’ll have another 13 sailing centers spread out over the country. There are many yacht clubs in Malaysia too, even in Langkawi, there are already 3. We’re trying our best to develop sailing, but regattas by Yacht clubs is not the best way to develop sailing. The best way is to build the sailing schools, and teach the people how to sail. In our sailing center, we have 65 children and most of them are girls.

Do you have some projects for 2008 Olympic Games(OG)? And will you go to the 2010 Asian Games?(AG)

Yes, of course. We’ll travel to Australia and some other countries for training.
For AG, we’ll be there too. We have 40 sailors arriving in Langkawi next week and they will stay here training for 2 years.

Why do you want to buy our boats? And what attracted you?

For me, LONGTZE Premier is a very fast boat, I love its speed. And in the competition, speed is a very important thing, so I think LONGTZE Premier will be used in the AG 2010. I will buy the LONGTZE Premier boats, and the Malaysian sailors of National team here can have their training on LONGTZE Premier, they will get much more experience than the other teams; so we have more possibility to win in 2010. I plan to buy 10 LONGTZE Premier.

What I feel about the boat is just like you have put in your brochures. This boat is very sexy, and the speed is really fast. I like it. But I don’t like the black one.

Personally, how did you begin to sail and is it your passion?

I love sailing, speed and fun, for those reasons. I began to sail when I was 20 years old, so I’ve been sailing for 26 years now. I have 6 children, and three of them are in the national team, so we are a really sailing family.
